Oh, I think this should go in the debate forum, actually.
I usually download a few songs from an artist and if it's good, I go out and buy the CD. Sometimes, though, I download songs for other people and make them CD's. Or if I lose/break a CD, and I usually just download all the songs back.
I'm not against it because it still get's the artist known, and that's all that SHOULD be important. Money is the devil!

I don't see how downloading can be justified cept it's way more convinent then going to the store looking for it and possiably not finding it then having to buy it online and wait dayz before it comes

I'm all for downloading (look in the debate hall thread about it to see why). Anyway I usually only like a couple tracks on a CD and don't want to pay for every song so it's more convenient to download. Either that or a CD is hard to find in stores so it's more convenient to download. And not all the legal download services have songs I want, or if they do there's some catch (like with itunes you HAVE to play it using their software). I guess I'm a pretty big downloader, heh.

If an artist deserves my money, they'll get it. Maybe I'll like the songs I download enough to buy their new CD, or maybe I'll buy some merchandise. But if they've only got one or two good songs then they don't deserve it.

I dunno guys what you think should downloading even be a option? I can't think of other ways to even sample usic but the radio really either but how do you think the music industry would be if you couldn't download music?
oh yeah how many songs you enojy do you think are required to buy the CD?

I'd say about half the CD, give or take. I mean, I don't necessarily have to love those songs, but I should be able to listen to them and enjoy them.

I agree with gold on about half have to be good. For example, Megadeth's new album (United Abominations) has 5 good songs out of 11 total. And then out of 5 good ones, 3 are amazingly awesome, which gives me enough incentive to blow 14 dollars on a piece of plastic.

I guess it's a piece of plastic, you make it sound like a bad thing. When i buy CDs and it's the same situation that spy mentioned 5 good songs 3 amazing songs, after like a week of listening to it MOST of the time that 5 good songs turn into 10 or so and the CDs usually get better i think anyone else feel this way?

Yeah, even though, to be honest, DLing is the only way I can listen to music. I never get a chance to buy CDs, really.

I listen to alot of vinyl, but I have a player that can record onto my PC, so I allow others to DL them using slsk. Some of it is quite rare and some people may not have the money to buy it so I'm all for dling music. Besides, making music should be fun and for the fans, not a living IMO.

I agree with Zare, about the "other songs" growing on you -- I usually download a few songs, listen to them, then buy the cd just to have. I like having CD's, even if I listen to the dl'd music. Makes me feel like I supported the artist, but still stayed true to myself.

Well my view on downloading has changed over the years and everything makes sense from previous arguements i've had in the past. The artists get a lot of money anyways. The thing is, I've downloaded a few songs but I guess i've been iffy with the software and the viruses you can get. My laptop got a virus because of it but it was my laptop and i was able to remove it luckily. But that's what keeps me away...=P
Also I've also used the "half" rule. For me to buy a CD, half the CD has to be good, ATLEAST. My sister bought the Nickelback CD for example, thinking that the entire CD was going to be excellent based on the songs they released. Now the songs they released were good, but the REST OF THE CD SUCKS...it really does...there are only 3 songs that were good...=/
